This lovely Chinese red flowering bulb is a member of the Amaryllis family native to South Africa. It its native habitat it blooms during the rainy season and then becomes dormant when the dry season returns.

To keep this plant constantly growing and blooming (it can bloom 2 to 3 times a year) from the same bulb, keep the soil in the pot moist and allow good drainage. Do not allow the pot to sit in a saucer of water or it will rot.

Sprekalia is a tropical plant (zone 8-10) that prefers a southern exposure inside in cold weather and an eastern exposure outside in spring and summer. It is a heavy feeder so fertilize with a 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 every 3-4 weeks except when in bloom.

Small bulblets will form at the base of the bulb which will grow into mature bulbs that can be separated to provide more plants or can be left on the original bulb.

As with most bulbs it does best when pot bound.
